Description
Buddhism was a dead religion in India where Lord Buddha has attained Enligh tenment, turned the wheel of Law and passed into Mahaparinirvana till about the beginning of the nineteenth century. The revival movement took a concrete shape with the founding of the Mahabodhi Society of India in 1891 by Anagarika Dharmapala (1864-1933) of Sri Lanka and the Bengal Buddhist Association (i. e. Buddha Dharmankur Sabha) in 1892 by Ven. Kripasaran Mahathera (1865-1926) of Chittagong (now in Bangladesh). They met each other in Calcutta. The identity of their object drew them closer. And the two organizations launched in their own way a sincere and undaunted drive to revive Buddhism in India. Both came to the field in the peak of their youth with the zeal and spirit of selfless service and sacrifice. The Buddhist revival movement transformed into a mighty mass move- ment under the able leadership of Dr. B. R. Ambedkar (1891-1956), the chief architect of the Indian Constitution.
