Description
When Siddhartha Gotama became a Samma Sambuddha, all his family members were delighted, were benefited. But people from his in-laws side became his opponents. One among them was Siddhartha’s cousin Tissa. As he grew old he came to his senses and realized that so many people were walking on the path shown by the Buddha. Why not I also walk on the path and see. He got ordained but his ego remained intact. The Buddha made him understand and engaged him in Vipassana. When the Buddha was at Vesali (Vaishali) along with the Sangha, he announced to the bhikkhus that four months hence he would attain parinibbana. The Bhikkhus became sad on hearing this. The immature ones sat near the Buddha and started weeping. Some offered garlands of scented flowers as was the custom. But Tissa thought that the Buddha was going to attain parinibbana. I should become an arahat when he is alive. Having thought so he started practising Vipassana in solitude. The Buddha expressed his approval and told the bhikkhus that this was the correct way of showing devotion towards him and not by offering flowers and scents. Following the Dhamma step by step is the right way of worshipping me.
